ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) – Fog and icy roads caused issues on St. Louis area roads during the Friday morning commute.

Around 6:30 a.m., numerous crashes began causing delays in the westbound lanes of the Poplar Street Bridge. Emergency crews were responding to the crashes, but traffic was beginning to back up shortly after they were reported.

Icy conditions, and a multi-vehicle crash, closed the northbound lanes of 67 at the Lewis Bridge over the Missouri River around 6 a.m. The southbound lanes of the bridge remained open.

MoDOT said it did not pre-treat the roads because the situation did not meet the conditions for pre-treatment.

"When they got out on the bridge, they couldn't find any of the slick spots, but they had a lot of trouble seeing with the fog. We really don't know if it was slick or not, but we put out salt as soon as we arrived. It's unfortunate that had some accidents this morning," says Marc Crodkin, with MoDot.

However, MoDOT said it will pre-treat the roads over the weekend because there is 50 percent chance for frost.

IDOT told News 4 it did pre-treat roads ahead of Friday's commute.
