Shots fired at officers responding to north St. Louis homicide scene, police say

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) – An unknown suspect fired shots at police who were conducting one of two homicide investigations in north St. Louis Thursday morning.  

Around 1:05 a.m., police found a man with a gunshot wound to the chest in the 2900 block North Newstead. The unidentified man was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead around 2:15 a.m.

A little less than five hours later, police were called to the 5100 block of Labadie for another shooting. When police arrived, they found 27-year-old Derrick Smith, of the 5100 block of St. Louis, with a fatal gunshot wound to the back. He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.  

Around 6:50 a.m., News 4's Kelly Davis was at the scene of the shooting on Labadie and Norwood when she heard shots fired near where police were conducting their investigation. Officers were seen drawing their weapons and searching for a suspect.

According to police, an unknown suspect was in a nearby gangway firing shots at the officers.

There were no reports of officers or bystanders being hit by any of the shots that were fired. 

No suspect information has been released. 

All investigations are ongoing.
