Koster to announce plan to curb abusive debt collection

Posted: Updated:

ST. LOUIS (AP/KMOV.com) - Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster is pushing for changes to court rules in an effort to halt what he calls abusive debt-collection actions.

Koster will be in St. Louis Thursday to spell out the details of his plan. The Democrat says research shows that abusive debt-collection practices disproportionately target minorities.

In fact, over the last several years, Koster said his office has received more complaints about the abusive tactic than just about anything else.

While officials said legal changes have made it easier for Koster to crack down on the practice, it is clear more work still needs to be done.

Anyone who feels they are being abused by a debt collector can file a complaint with Koster’s office.
