NORTH ST. LOUIS COUNTY (KMOV.com) – Two men are charged with allegedly stealing over $30,000 worth of wheels and tires in North St. Louis County.

Hykeem King-Tanter, 18, and Melford Newlon, 40, face charges for wheel and tire thefts since April, 2015. Most of the thefts occurred overnight while cars were parked at apartment complexes.

In one incidence, a victim had her wheels stolen from her home on Lakecrest Lane. The victim went to her neighbor, Bobby Campbell, for help.

“They had their own jacks and blocks to put under the car. They took three of her tires and tried to get the other one,” said Campbell.

Police say the stolen tires were sold to an unidentified tire shop in Alton, Ill. The arrests were made after police found a set of custom wheels worth $25,000 and were sold to the unidentified business. King-Tanter also allegedly received several checks for the stolen items from the tire shop.

King-Tanter confessed to a total of 11 other thefts, police say. Newlon also confessed to stealing tires and selling them to the same unidentified tire shop.

The investigation is ongoing to see if others were involved with the thefts.
