CityArchRiver: No plans to replace demolished garage near Arch grounds

Posted: Updated:

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) – Another part of the Gateway Arch renovations was recently completed, but many are wondering whether there are plans to replace the garage that was located north of the Arch grounds.

The garage was demolished in March to make room for the renovation project. Many people said the parking garage, which used to be on Washington Avenue, next to the Arch, played a big role in downtown and was important for the Laclede’s Landing area.

The garage allowed people to park and visit nearby shops and bars, but CityArchRiver officials said the garage posed a problem, creating a barrier between the Arch and surrounding city. The officials said it made it difficult for people to fully experience the downtown area. They also said there are currently no plans to replace the garage.

"There is a lot of parking in downtown St. Louis that is vacant on a normal day. For example, where we're standing right now, within a five minute walk there are 2,600 vacant spaces on a normal day,” said Ryan McClure, a member of CityArchRiver.

McClure said one of those places people can park is Stadium East, which is empty for a much of the day.

There are plans to turn the old garage space into a park for festivals and concerts.
