Police say drunk driver to blame for ramming into homeowner's garage

ST. CHARLES COUNTY, Mo. (KMOV.com) - A St. Charles County man got a rude awakening after a vehicle crashed into his garage door early Friday morning.

Police said a drunk driver was responsible for the crash, which happened at 1:15 a.m. in the 1200 block of Caulks Hill.

Homeowner James Shy said, at first, he thought burglars were causing the noise outside his house.

"I  thought someone was trying to break in," said Shy.

He quickly realized that noise was the result of someone ramming a vehicle into his garage.

Shy said the driver initially did not want to exit the vehicle, and needed help getting out.

"I think he was so out of it, he didn't even know where he was," said Shy. "He probably didn't know he ran off the road."

The garage shares an interior wall with the living room, where Shy said he keeps a crib for his grandchildren. Fortunately, the crib was empty when the incident happened.

Aside from having to replace his garage door, Shy said he is also dealing with the painful memory of losing his 19-year-old daughter to a drunk driver.

Shy has filed a claim with his insurance company, but is unsure how much damage with be covered under his current plan.

This recent incident marks the second time this week a driver has crashed into a house in St. Charles County.
