EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (KMOV.com) – United States Attorney for the Southern District of Illinois Stephen R. Wigginton announced his resignation Tuesday.

Wigginton’s resignation will be effective at midnight on December 11. Following his resignation, Wigginton plans on joining a national law firm based in the St. Louis area.

Wigginton was sworn into office in August 2010 after being nominated by President Barack Obama and a unanimous confirmation by the United States Senate. While serving in office, he was part of several subcommittees and working groups, including Violent and Organized Crime and Health Care Fraud.

During his five years in office, Wigginton increased the number of prosecutions of law enforcement officers and public officials caught disobeying the law, according to a press release. The release also stated he “aggressively pursued many affirmative civil enforcement actions against individuals and corporations involved in defrauding the government” and recovered over $450,000,000 “through the aggressive enforcement of both civil and criminal actions."
