DARDENNE PRAIRIE, Mo. (KMOV.com) - A 20-year-old man's careless behavior on the road is what authorities said led to the death of a Missouri Highway Patrol trooper.

Serghei Pavel Comerzan of Mexico, Missouri was arrested on Monday, three months after 25-year-old Trooper James Bava was killed in a traffic crash.

Comerzan faces multiple criminal charges, including second-degree murder or first-degree manslaughter, resisting a lawful stop, careless and imprudent driving, and failure to register a motor vehicle.

Charging documents state Comerzan was traveling at 105 mph on a motorcycle, when Trooper Bava attempted to stop him along Highway FF in southwestern Audrain County on August 28.

Prosecutors said a high-speed pursuit ensued after Comerzan did not comply with the trooper.

During the chase, authorities said Trooper Bava's Dodge Charger swerved off the highway, struck a ditch, a fence and some trees, before ultimately catching fire. Police said Bava died in the crash, and Comerzan fled the area.

Comerzan remains in police custody on a $100,000 cash-only bond. A court date has not yet been scheduled.
