ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) – A man is facing charges in connection with the shooting of a St. Louis police officer that occurred Sunday,

Walter Saddler, 23, is charged with assault on a law enforcement officer, armed criminal action, resisting arrest, and unlawful use of a weapon.

The shooting happened around 9:45 p.m. in the 4300 block of College Avenue, in the city’s Fairgrounds neighborhood. Police said the officer was rushed to a hospital with non life-threatening injuries and is expected to be okay.

“He’s conscious, awake and alert, but as you can expect it’s incredibly traumatic,” St. Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson said late Sunday about the officer who was shot.

Authorities said the officer was conducting patrols with a St. Louis Police Sergeant when they saw Saddler, who began running when he noticed the marked patrol vehicle. While Saddler was running, police said, they noticed the suspect was armed with a firearm.

Saddler ran towards a blocked gangway, which is when, according to Chief Dotson, he engaged in a physical confrontation with the officer, who was attempting to gain control of the suspect’s weapon.

During the struggle, Saddler allegedly fired the 9mm gun one time, striking the officer in the shoulder area.

After firing the shot, Saddler ran through an alley. While the suspect was running, the injured officer fired shots at the suspect but did not strike him, police said.

The sergeant followed Saddler and was able to apprehend him with the help of the officer.

According to police, the gun used to shoot the officer, which was reported stolen on October 24, was recovered at the scene.

The 24-year-old officer graduated from the police academy in October. Per department policy, he has been placed on administrative leave.

“Whether you’re a 30-year officer or an officer who graduated from our academy last month, when you go out on the street, you could encounter an armed individual who is willing to use a gun against police officers and that’s what we saw tonight,” Dotson said outside of Barnes Jewish Hospital.

Police said there are no other suspects being sought in the case.
