EDWARDSVILLE, Il (KMOV.com) – Instagram is not only for posting photos or videos. This social media outlet can also allow someone to buy and sell merchandise.

One Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, SIUE, college student, Diamond Johnson, is one of those buyers. Johnson was searching an Instagram account called, "Retail Connect." This account was advertising a special deal where "Insta" users can buy several pairs of Jordan sneakers for just a few hundred dollars.

After Johnson discovered the bargain, she decided to work extra hours to save money for her new kicks. Gradually, Johnson wired money to the account holders she was told that worked for the shoe company.

“He kept saying he would pay me or give me all my stuff. He even talked to my mother on certain occasions. Nothing really went through,” Johnson said.

Johnson says she is nearly out of $1,000. The company shut down its account and the people she was in contact with have quit answering her calls.

“It’s been a series of months we’ve been fighting with them. I don’t think I’m going to get my shoes,” she said.

Mike Colombo, KMOV investigative reporter, left messages to some of the phone numbers that have been given to Johnson, but he has yet to hear back.

Colombo found a similar Instagram account to Retail Connect called, “Rite Hite." Ironically, this account provides a link which shows how to properly wire money.

Colombo has reached out to Instagram to speak about this scam, but there has yet to be a reply.

Instagram’s site does warn users about the company not supporting buying and selling goods or services through Instagram.

The number one tip to learn from this scam: never wire money to someone you have not met in person. If you are a victim of a similar type of scam, you can report your claim to Instagram.
