(KMOV.com) -- Something exciting is happening this weekend in the St. Charles School District. It's called the first Lego League Qualifying Event.

Teams from all over the area will be showcasing their creative and scientific talents in competition by building robots out of Legos.

"It's the absolute precursor to kids having careers later on in life in engineering, technology, mathematics,” said Stacy Myers, STEM coordinator for the St. Charles School District. “Some of those soft skills that they talk about that they need in the workplace now with teamwork, critical thinking, cooperation.”

The event takes place this weekend from 9 am to 3 pm on both days at St. Charles West High School. Other Lego robotics teams from the area will be competing to advance to the first World Championship at the Edward Jones Dome next spring.
