ST. LOUIS (KMOV) – The Newstead Avenue Missionary Baptist Church is a victim of crime yet again. Church Deacon Roger Hunt said church members noticed the church’s air conditioner was stolen Tuesday morning.
“You don't have a respect for yourself you don't have respect for the community, and you definitely don't have a respect for God’s house,” said Hunt. “In addition they took and cut the copper pipes up to the wall of the church. Then also went into the electrical box.”
News 4 just met with Hunt Saturday after crooks stole pieces off the church’s A.C. unit causing more than $15,000 in damage. With the second theft, he said that number has risen to $50,000.
“No we don't have that kind of money sitting In a reserve fund,” he said.
Hunt thinks the condition of North Market Street makes the church an easy target for crime and hopes police patrol it more. He also hopes the person, or persons who did this stop committing crimes against the church.
“You really do need to stop,” he said. “It's disheartening there's no respect.”
Hunt said the church is working on installing cameras and alarms outside of the building.
