FENTON, Mo. (KMOV,com) -

A Jefferson County deputy responding to a domestic dispute call Monday evening shot the suspect when a struggle broke out among officers after the suspect gained control over an deputy's gun.

According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, a mother told police her son was out of control, threatened her and made suicidal threats.

When deputies arrived, at the home in the 1600 block of Sparrow Point, they found the 23-year-old son wielding a knife. Officers said he willingly gave up the knife, but put up a fight when they tried to take him into custody and transport him to an area hospital.

A fight broke out and the suspect was able to grab partial control of a deputy’s weapon and fired a shot which prompted another deputy to fire at the suspect.

The suspect was conveyed to the hospital where he is listed in critical condition.

The names of the deputies involved have not been released.
