BELLEVILLE, Ill. (KMOV.com) -

An apartment complex in Belleville sustained major damage to its roof when a fire broke out Wednesday night, firefighters said.

The blaze broke out in the 200 block of North 46th Street around 7:00 p.m. The fire started in a third floor apartment, causing major damage to the building's roof. Seven apartments could not be inhabited overnight, firefighters said.

According to police, the origin of the fire was at one of the upstairs apartments in a bedroom closet. Investigators believe the fire was intentionally set at or near floor level. They are working to determine if the fire was set using an accelerant.

The lower floors suffered smoke and water damage.

Nobody was injured.
