Volunteers install smoke detectors across St. Louis area

Posted: Updated:

(KMOV.com) – Volunteers from all over the St. Louis area are doing their part to keep citizens safe by installing smoke detectors in hundreds of homes.

The volunteers with The Red Cross have teamed up with area firefighters to launch “Smoke Alarm Blitz” to prevent deaths and injuries in house fires.

“You may recall last winter we had a really tremendous cold spell. And within ten days, we had ten fatalities,” said Cindy Erickson, Regional CEO of the American Red Cross. “Those are homes that don’t have a working smoke alarm.”

Here are a few tips to stay safe:

  • Have a working smoke alarm on every floor of your home
  • Practice an escape plan
  • Create an easy-to-carry disaster supply bag
