BELLEVILLE, Ill. (KMOV.com) -

Detectives in Belleville are investigating more than a dozen cases of vandalism that happened Thursday night.

Police say someone used cans of spray paint to plaster racial slurs and even gang names on cars, garages, buildings and at a city park.

“It's messed up because we have to get the paint removed,” said LaMonica Jackson, one of the victims.

Her car is one of 14 damaged properties police are investigating.

“Due to the proximity of the different cases, it appears that individuals were walking down the street and were spray painting vehicles and properties as they went along,” said Sgt. Mark Heffernan with Belleville police.

Heffernan says due to the nature of the crime, it looks like a juvenile might be behind it, however police not ruling out anyone out as a suspect due to age. He says the damaged properties were all in the same neighborhood, but he doesn’t believe anyone was targeted.

“They need to start respecting other people’s property. It's something you hear in school growing up, but it's something you need to take very seriously,” said victim Natalie Platzkoester.

Heffernan says the suspect(s) could be facing felony charges.

If you have any information surrounding any of these vandalism cases, call Belleville police.
