ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) - Square, a global tech startup founded by two St. Louis natives, is opening a fourth U.S. office in its hometown.

The mobile payments company will base its new office in the Central West End's Cortex Innovation District and hire more than 40 full-time employees immediately with plans to create 200 job positions over the next five years.

"As a St. Louis-born company, we are thrilled that Square will soon begin operations from a new Midwest hub giving it a central location to grow its product and bring new jobs to St. Louis," said Mayor Francis Slay on Wednesday.

Jim McKelvey and Jack Dorsey, who also co-founded Twitter, launched Square in 2009. The company introduced a compact square-shaped gadget that attaches to a mobile device and processes credit card transactions. Square later expanded its operations and now provides analytical, financial, and marketing services to small businesses.

The talent pool from St. Louis universities, research centers, and training programs prompted Square to return to its roots.

The company is currently looking to fill job positions in recruiting, customer support, and office management.
