Repeat DUI offenders in Illinois could soon be back behind the wheel

Posted: Updated:

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP/KMOV.com) - Illinois drivers with multiple DUI convictions may get another chance to drive legally in 2016.

New data released by the Illinois Secretary of State's office shows there are more than 5,000 Illinois residents who were convicted of drunken driving and had their licenses revoked.

Those drivers would be eligible to apply for a restricted permit under a new law signed by Gov. Bruce Rauner, which goes into effect on January 1.

However, the offenders must first prove they have been drug and alcohol free for at least three years.
