Wildwood considers building subdivision on former waste oil dumping site

WILDWOOD, Mo (KMOV.com) -

Wildwood officials are considering a proposal to allow construction of homes on a site that was used to dump waste oil.

Widlwood’s Planning and Zoning Commission heard a proposal Monday to build 20 homes on the Bliss Superfund Site, a plot of land that was once used by the Bliss Waste Oil Company as a dumping ground.

Many residents and officials are skeptical the site is safe. The EPA has tested the land for years and now believes it is no longer dangerous. The project was originally given approval in 2007, but was later pulled back over pollution concerns.

“The residential development is being proposed on a site that has a 40-year history as one of the most polluted places in Missouri,” said Wildwood City Councilman Greg Stine.

Wildwood Mayor Tim Woerther said the city council is not feeling pressure to approve or reject the project.
