ALTON, Ill. (KMOV.com) - Illinois American Water issued a boil order for Alton residents Sunday evening, following a water main break.

Officials said about 500 residents are expected to experience an impact to their water pressure or an interruption in water service, as crews work to make critical repairs to the water main on Fosterburg Road and College Avenue in Alton. Motorists should avoid this area if possible.

Customers in the affected area are told to bring water to a rolling boil for three minutes before using it for drinking or cooking. Tap water is clear for use if it is for washing or bathing.

The boil order is in effect until further notice.
