Berkeley police officers to start wearing body cameras

Posted: Updated:
BERKELEY (KMOV.com) -

All Berkeley police officers will be outfitted with body cameras, effective immediately.

Some Berkeley officers already had cameras. However, an officer-involved shooting in December was not recorded on a body camera because the officer who pulled the trigger did not turn his camera on.

“He had a camera, but we had just began our trial with the cameras,” said Berkeley Police Chief Frank McCall Jr.

McCall said the department now has a strict policy on when cameras are supposed to be on. Officers who do not comply will face reprucussions.

McCall also said he believes the cameras will help the department be more transparent. The cameras cost around $5,000 and are paid for out of Berkeley’s general fund.
