Online campaign created to raise funds for gun buyback in St. Louis

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) – An online campaign to raise funds for a gun buyback program will officially kickoff Friday.

Board of Aldermen President Lewis Reed says the goal of the campaign and program is to remove hundreds of guns from neighborhoods around the City of St. Louis.

The online campaign is part of a national platform called ‘Gun by Gun.’ The program allows people from anywhere to donate to the cause.

The goal is to raise $15,000. After the money is raised, a date will be set for when people can turn in their guns.

For every $100 dollars raised, one gun will be purchased and destroyed.

Reed says this is the first program of its kind in St. Louis.

“Obviously everyone understands the impact of guns on the city. For every gun we can remove from the streets if we can save one life, it's well worth it,” Reed said. “So we (are) asking people to go online to donate to help save lives. This is just another vehicle to do that.”

Reed will officially announce the program at Des Lee Gallery at 5:30 Friday night.
