9-year-old with Type 1 juvenile diabetes runs for a cure

BELLEVILLE, Ill. (KMOV.com) - Isabella Schebiel, 9, prefers to go by Izzy, and is a very active dancer. But she does play favorites.

"I love ballet the most," Izzy said.

Izzy has been dancing ballet since she was 2 years old. She and her peers dress the part while perfecting their points, wearing leotars and ballet shoes. But Izzy wears something the other ballerinas do not - a continuous glucose monitor.

A few months ago, Izzy was diagnosed with Type 1 juvenile diabetes.

"I just immediately started crying," said Kim, Izzy's mother. "I think the hardest part for me being the mommy is I can't fix it."

But she could fight it. The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation is hosting a walk in St. Charles September 26 to raise money to find a cure. Izzy has her own team - and they will all be wearing tutus.

When she was diagnosed, Izzy didn't know anything about diabetes. She just thought it was some sort of disease.

"It's hard to live with...but you can live with it," Izzy said.
