Residents demand action on contaminated Bridgeton landfill

Posted: Updated:

BRIDGETON, Mo. (KMOV.com) - Residents rallied Thursday night, demanding action, after the state released several reports about radioactive contamination outside of the Bridgeton landfill.

Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster released the report on September 3. One document indicated an underground fire at the landfill had moved past the very structures installed to keep it from spreading. There is concern that the fire could reach buried nuclear waste in an adjacent landfill.

Some residents said they are concerned for the health of children living in that area.

The reports also indicate the landfill owner, Republic Services, could have prevented current problems. Koster filed a lawsuit against the company in 2013, alleging the owners violated a number of state environmental laws.

The company maintains the situation is under control.
