CHESTERFIELD, Mo. ( – Three girls saved the life of a 3-year-old boy at the Chesterfield Family Aquatic Center in July.

Hannah, Victoria and Kaleigh were on duty as lifeguards when they sprang into action.

“I saw a boy at the bottom of the pool,” 16-year-old Hannah said as she began to cry. “Then I jumped in, and his dad helped me get him outta the water.”

After pulling the child out of the water, the rescue became a team effort.

“We pulled the child out and assessed him, realized he wasn’t breathing, there was no heartbeat,” Victoria said.

“Your brain just kinda flashes and you do what you need to do,” said Kaleigh.

“So we started compressions on him, and after four cycles he started to cough up water,” said Victoria.

“We all worked together as a team,” Kaleigh said.

“That moment, when he started to cough up water was a relief,” Victoria said, “but I kept thinking, ‘we’re not gonna lose him!’”

The boy made a full recovery the same day he was rescued.

For saving his life the three lifeguards were given an award by the Monarch Fire Department.

“There’s nothing better than knowing we saved a child as a team,” said Kaleigh.
