PHELPS COUNTY, Mo. (KMOV.com) - All lanes of westbound Interstate 44 were closed Wednesday night after a serious crash.

Reports from the Missouri State Highway Patrol stated three semi-trucks and one vehicle were totaled in the crash which occurred near mile marker 169 around 8:30 p.m.

Official records stated the vehicle hit the back of the first semi-truck, then crossed the center median, hitting another semi head on. The semi that was hit head on then struck another semi, whose driver tried to avoid the incident. The semi-truck that tried to avoid the crash went off the right side of the road, returned to the roadway, and overturned, blocking both eastbound lanes.

A witness said one car involved was flipped over near the median. Motorists who drove by pulled one victim from that car.

The semi-truck hit head on came to rest blocking both eastbound lanes and caught fire.

The vehicle that reportedly set off this chain of events ended up in the passing lane in the eastbound lane. The first semi that was struck came to rest on the westbound right shoulder.

Three people were taken to the hospital in serious condition.

The highway re-opened around 11:00 p.m.
