Lincoln Co town fires clerk, police officer; locks police chief out of office

FOLEY, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

Officials in the small Lincoln Co. town of Foley fired the city’s elected clerk, a police officer, and locked the police chief out of his office.

Foley Mayor Keith Virtress and the Board of Aldermen held a closed door meeting at city hall Wednesday night. A decision was made to fire one of the town’s four police officers, the elected city clerk, and call a hearing for the police chief. Some believe the chief will also be fired after the hearing.

Virtress also changed the locks on police department doors.

“I was locked out yesterday,” said Foley’s police chief said. “They had the Lincoln County Sheriff up here and I was notified by the mayor that I would no longer have access to the building.”

Both the police chief and clerk told News 4 they believe the firings may be retaliation for a probe into possible wrongdoing by public officials. Virtress chose not to comment on the firings.
