De Soto police use social media to crack down on crime

DE SOTO, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

Police officers in De Soto said they are solving more criminal cases with the help of social media.

The De Soto Police Department said its Facebook page is an effective investigative tool, with no cost to taxpayers.

"We have 5,120 investigators at our disposal, and within a moments notice, I can post something online and have investigators working on it right away," said Det. Rick Draper.

Investigators recently recovered a phone lifted from a Walmart bathroom, after sharing surveillance photos of the suspected thief with more than 5,000 Facebook followers. Within minutes of posting the photos, Draper said the person who picked up the phone came forward.

De Soto police said when they have posted crime information on Facebook, asking for the public's help, 9 out of 10 times they were able to solve the case.
