ST. CLAIR COUNTY, Ill. (KMOV.com) – An elderly person died in St. Clair County last week after contracting the West Nile virus, health officials said.

The death is the third West Nile virus-related death in Illinois and is the first reported south of Springfield in 2015. The other deaths occurred in Cook and Kendall counties, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health.

The virus is transmitted through the bite of a mosquito that received the virus by feeding on an infected bird.

Officials with the Illinois Department of Public Health stated that four out of five people with the virus do not show symptoms.
