Effort seeks to recall University City mayor

Posted: Updated:

UNIVERSITY CITY, Mo. (AP) - A petition drive is underway to remove the mayor of University City.

Critics of Mayor Shelley Welsch announced the effort Tuesday. It is fallout from the St. Louis suburb's contract to turn emergency medical transit over to a private company, Gateway Ambulance Service.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the announcement of the petition drive came during a city council meeting, drawing sustained applause from an audience made up almost entirely of people opposed to the agreement to shift medical transit to the private firm.

Gateway placed two ambulances on duty in University City last week.

City officials have said the move to Gateway will not cost any city firefighters their jobs. But the city will probably not replace the next 10 to 12 fire personnel who leave.
