Cardinals Care fundraisers help Jackie Joyner-Kersee Foundation, center

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) – Cardinals Care provides a lot of support for the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Foundation and center in East St. Louis.

Kersee, a native of East St. Louis, has been called one of the greatest female athletes of the 20th Century, and a drive over the Poplar Street Bridge into East St. Louis shows how much the former Olympian cares.

Kersee started her foundation 20 years ago in East St. Louis. Today, the track star isn’t the only one who cares about kids in the area, Cardinals Care is also helping kids with the Redbird Rookies program.

“They’re learning good sportsmanship, learning to work together, bringing volunteers out and really trying to boost that program,” said Kersee.

The Redbird Rookies practice on the fields at the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Center and some of the money raised from Cardinals Care fundraisers go back to helping kids in Kersee’s foundation.

“I’d rather them being at the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Center than them being out on the streets doing things that can be disruptive,” Kersee said.

Kersee will be at the Cardinals Care 6K on Saturday handing out medals to race finishers.
