Mehlville superintendent paints bleak picture of district finances

SOUTH ST. LOUIS COUNTY (KMOV.com) -

The superintendent of the Mehlville School District painted a bleak picture of the district’s finances at a meeting Tuesday night.

Superintendent Chris Gaines told parents the South County district is running low on revenue and has already made a significant amount of cuts. Gaines said a number of factors such as declining state aid and decreasing property values are the reason for reduced revenue. Gaines also said the property tax rates in Mehlville are the second lowest in St. Louis County.

In November, voters will be asked to approve a $140 per year property tax hike on the average home. Many parents at the meeting were skeptical about such a proposal.
