Local dealership helps family of woman killed in front of son

(KMOV.com) - The story of a 5-year-old boy who witnessed his mother's murder from the backseat of a car prompted a local dealership to step forward and give back.

Whitney Brown, 24, was shot and killed on August 12 in north St. Louis after someone fired into her car. Brown's 5-year-old son Jakeem was also inside the vehicle when the homicide happened. Jakeem's grandmother, Erica Jones, now looks after him.

Bommarito Mazda donated a new car to the family after learning that Jones needed help replacing her daughter's vehicle, which remained riddled with bullet holes.

Jones and Jakeem picked up their new car on Friday, September 4. Jones said the outpouring of support has been overwhelming.

"I wasn't expecting any of this. People are really genuine and have good hearts," said Jones.

An anonymous police officer also stepped forward in August to help the family by taking Jakeem on a shopping spree for school supplies.
