ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) – The latest statistics from the St. Louis Police Department show a rise in several crimes so far this year.

Throughout the month of August homicides were up 60 percent. The yearly total of homicides for 2015 in the City of St. Louis is currently at 137.

More than 1,500 people have been assaulted with a gun so far this year, a 43 percent jump from 2014.

Reports of stolen guns are up by 70 percent, police said.

Mayor Francis Slay said he believes lax gun laws are a big contributor to the problem. He said a new gun docket court and 160 new police officers are needed to fight the crime.

UMSL criminologist Rick Rosenfeld attributes the rise to an increase in heroin use.
