ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) - The evening rush after Labor Day will hit drivers on Interstate 44 and Interstate 270 hard.

The Missouri Department of Transportation and its contractor will start rehabilitating the westbound Interstate 44 bridge over the Meramec River near Interstate 270 Tuesday. Crews will start removing the driving surface of the bridge, repair the pavement underneath, and replace the driving surface.

Workers plan to close two lanes on westbound Interstate 44 to set up a barrier wall overnight September 8 between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., weather permitting. After 5 a.m., the far right lane on westbound Interstate 44 will be closed. One lane on westbound I-44 will stay closed around the clock for the next six weeks.

Crews working in the far right lane will block access to the Soccer Park exit off westbound Interstate 44. Drivers will need to use the Bowles exit and the outer road to access businesses and facilities in the Soccer Park area.

Workers will keep two through lanes from Interstate 270 and two through lanes from Interstate 44 during the day. They may close a second lane nightly between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m.

MoDOT encourages drivers to consider alternate routes to avoid congestion during evening rush hour traffic. Work on the westbound bridge is scheduled to be completed in about six weeks.
