Parents demand changes in policy regarding transgender student in Hillsboro

Posted: Updated:

(KMOV.com) - More than 100 parents gathered outside a meeting of the Hillsboro School Board to ask for changes when it comes to who can use which bathrooms at school.

The push comes after a dispute over 17-year-old Lila Perry. Perry was born male but identifies as a female. Perry said the district has offered her use of a gender neutral restroom, but Perry said she should be able to use the girls’ restroom. Students staged a walkout over the issue on Monday.

The Hillsboro School Board met about the topic for over two hours Thursday night. Outside, parents gathered to pray for the district and for students. Parents also passed around a petition calling for the board to adopt a policy clarifying who exactly can use a girls or boys restroom, and allow anyone to use a gender neutral restroom. Organizers said over 900 parents have signed the petition.

“We want to emphasize this is not against anybody, most everyone supports the individual in question involved, they just want a policy in place so that everyone’s privacy is honored,” said parent Derrick Good.

News 4 attempted to reach out to Perry, but did not hear back.  Friends of Perry told News 4 they believe the district’s current policies do not need to change.

Some students are planning a rally before the Hillsboro football game Friday night.
