JEFFERSON COUNTY, Mo. (KMOV.com) – With a new school year beginning one local district is hoping to help students with a very basic need.
In a district where about half the kids qualify for free or reduced lunches the Northwest R-1 School District’s goal is to make sure every child has food to eat.
"We know that poverty is for real in Jefferson County and we just want to make the smallest dent we can make in it and help as much as we can," said Valley Middle School Principle Dayle Burgdorf.
With this in mind the district opened a food pantry with the help of the St. Louis Food Bank.
Nearly 100 families took advantage of the much needed safety net, but now the empty shelves are collecting dust as the need continues to grow.
“We have students who go home on the weekends that we provide backpacks for them to use for supplemental food and sometimes it's not supplemental," said Principle Burgdorf.
The district attempts to meet every need that may be requested, even clothing.
The district is accepting any and all donations including non-perishable food, toiletries, or even monetary contributions.
If you would like to donate you can drop off any donation at any school in the Northwest R-1 District or call the middle school.
