FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS, Ill. (KMOV.com) – Several Metro East fire departments were dispatched Thursday afternoon after a five-alarm fire ignited the Longacre Ponds Apartment complex.

According to officials, eight units were destroyed and multiple pumpers were on the scene, including Fairview Heights, O’Fallon, French Village, Collinsville, Swansea, Northwest, Caseyville, Lebanon, Villa Hills, Signal Hills, Smithton, and the St. Louis Downtown Airport.

The Fire Chief told News 4 the building alarm never alerted the fire department, but a police officer driving by saw the smoke from the fire and reported it.

No residents were home at the time of the fire. There were animals inside various units at the time of the blaze and officers were able to rescue all of them.

One firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion.

The Red Cross said it helping 21 people from the complex.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
