Wentzville Police Department warns public of possible donation scams

WENTZVILLE, MO (KMOV.com) – The Wentzville Police Department is issuing a warning after the death of several officers in the line of duty have gained national attention.

According to police, it is times like these that the public will see an increase in the number of fraudulent calls asking for donations. The Wentzville Police Department has put out a reminder stating it would not be calling citizens seeking donations.

Although some organizations collecting money for law enforcement are legitimate, Wentzville Chief of Police Chief Kevin Pyatt urges donators to be careful.

“Probably the best thing is ask questions about what is the name of the organization, mailing address, return phone number; there's nothing that says you have to donate right away. There's some high pressure, obviously people who are scamming use high pressure. Don't give any information related to credit cards like that over the phone. Ask them to call back and it gives you time to validate who that organization is before you decide you're going to donate," said Chief Keven Pyatt.

If you are unsure about an organization police say you could also request that the organization mail you something.
