ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) – The St. Louis Zoo has announced the unexpected passing of one of its western lowland gorillas.

According to a statement released by the zoo, Juma collapsed in his outdoor habitat at Fragile Forest around 1:30 Monday afternoon.

The 27-year-old male’s cause of the death is believed to be a heart condition, according to the zoo’s pathologist. An official cause of death with not be confirmed until other studies are completed, which could take a couple of weeks.

In 2011, Juma was diagnosed with permanent, irreversible changes to his heart muscle.

Juma, who was nicknamed “The Boss,” was born at the zoo in 1988 to mother Kivu and father Fred.

The median life expectancy of male western lowland gorillas is 31 years, the zoo’s statement read.
