University City begins outsourcing medical services

Posted: Updated:

UNIVERSITY CITY, Mo. (KMOV.com) – Starting Tuesday when people in University City call for an ambulance one paramedic and one EMT will respond, previously, two paramedics would also respond.

University City council members approved the plan to outsource emergency medical services last month. The outsourcing means that instead of paying for local current EMS services, a Kentucky based company, Gateway Ambulance Services, will be in charge of scheduling first responders.

Some University City residents are not happy about the change, claiming the plan puts lives at risk. Another major concern residents have is response times, which many people fear will be slower.

The move will save University City $500,000 a year.
