ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) – More than 30 cities across the United States report an increase in the amount of murders that have taken place within the last year.

According to the New York Times, Milwaukee is currently leading the country with a 76 percent increase from last year. St. Louis isn’t far behind with a 60 percent increase from 2014.  An increase in killings has also been seen in Baltimore, 56 percent, and Washington, 44 percent.

Law enforcement officials said they cannot pinpoint one reason for the rise, but, according to the New York Times, some believe intense national scrutiny of the use of force by police has made officers less aggressive and criminals bolder.

Many top police officials report seeing more young men in poor neighborhoods using violence to settle ordinary disputes.
