SWANSEA (KMOV.com) -

A man has been sentenced to 60 years in prison for the stabbing death of his girlfriend and the stabbing of her son that occurred in Swansea on August 29, 2015.

Alvin Harris, Jr., 38, was charged with first-degree murder, first-degree attempted murder, and aggravated battery of a child.

Police said they received a 911 call at Marcella Drive from a boy, 9, saying he had been stabbed in the neck by his mom's boyfriend.

Officers arrived and found the boy with three severe stab wounds and his mother, 38-year-old Sharetta Day, dead from multiple stab wounds.

The boy was later airlifted and taken to a St. Louis hospital.

Harris was barricaded inside the apartment when officers arrived but police were able to talk him out of the home and take him into custody.

"I heard him yelling at her and I knocked on the door. I said 'Sharetta, is everything ok? What's going on?'" said Staneice Luster, a neighbor. "She said, 'I'm bleeding! Call the police! He cut me!' It's traumatizing. I know that I did everything I could, but there wasn't much more I could do to help her."
