Federal grand jury investigating East St. Louis towing fees

EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (AP) - A federal grand jury is investigating how towing fees are collected by the city of East St. Louis.

FBI spokesman Brad Ware said Wednesday that an agent served city Treasurer Charlotte Moore with a summons the previous day ordering her to appear before the federal jury next month and provide the court with records related to city towing fees since September 2012.

The Belleville News-Democrat first reported on the federal probe.

The summons was served on the same day that several FBI agents, including the supervisor of the bureau's Fairview Heights' office, visited City Hall to meet with new city manager and former mayor Alvin Parks Jr.

Ware said the two FBI visits were not connected.
