EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (AP) - A student at a Southern Illinois University campus laboratory has been injured by a small explosion and fire.

Officials at the Edwardsville campus say the 23-year-old male student was working in the new science building around 3 p.m. on Tuesday when there was a chemical reaction.

The student suffered cuts to both hands, along with chemical burns on both arms. He was transported to a hospital.

The building was evacuated. Firefighters with the Edwardsville Fire Department extinguished the blaze.

University spokesman Doug McIlhagga says damage to the lab was minimal.

He says the building will be open for classes on Wednesday.
