A government program is available to victims who have suffered loss due to violent crime involving bodily harm or psychological injury.

The Crime Victims' Compensation Program in Missouri provides up to $25,000 in aid to cover various expenses, including funeral costs and medical bills. The program also provides support for lost wages and counseling expenses.

St. Louis officials said each year a small percentage of residents victimized in the city file a claim with the Missouri Department of Public Safety, although resources are readily available.

The fund in St. Louis is financed by court fees on felony and misdemeanor cases.

In Illinois, a similar program provides up to $27,000 in aid and is paid for by the state budget.

For information on the program and how to file a claim, call city officials at 314-622-4114 or send an email to PowersM@Stlouis-mo.gov.
