ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) – An anonymous St. Louis County Police officer and his wife have stepped forward to help a 5-year-old boy who witnessed the murder of his mother.

Whitney Brown, 24, was fatally shot on August 12 in north St. Louis when someone fired into her car. Her 5-year-old son Jakeem was in the backseat when the homicide occurred. Jakeem is now in the care of his grandmother.

A St. Louis County police officer and his wife, both of whom want to remain anonymous, took Jakeem shopping for school supplies. The officer bought Jakeem black and green sneakers, green shirts and jackets. Jakeem said green was his mother’s favorite color.

“You don’t find too many people who would be willing to help somebody going through tragedy,” said Jakeem’s grandmother Erica Jones. “His gesture of kindness and gratitude that he showed to my grandson speaks volumes.”

Jones told News 4 she hopes others will see the officers gestures and learn not to think all police officers are bad.

“He (Jakeem) cried when the officer left because he wanted to go over to his house and play with the grandsons,” Jones said.

Jones said she’s still in contact with the officer and wants Jakeem to stay in touch with him because he has been a positive influence during a troubling time.
