ST. LOUIS, Mo. ( -- The parents of a 6-year-old boy who was fatally shot near O’Fallon Park in March said recent shootings involving children have re-opened wounds for the family.

Marcus Johnson and his family were inside a van leaving O’Fallon Park when someone pulled up alongside and started firing shots.  Johnson was taken to a hospital but later died. His mother said the recent killing of Jamyla Bolden brought back feelings the Johnson family had when Marcus died.

“They’re 6, 9, 10, 11-years-old. They’re not living half their lives. They don’t ask to come into this world, we bring them into this world. I feel like something needs to be done because these babies are not living their life out,” said Quiana Johnson.

The Johnson family said young people dying in their North County community is becoming the norm. The family showed News 4 the programs from funerals of family members, many of whom died because of gun violence.

“You have war going on in your own neighborhoods now,” said Marcus Johnson Sr.

Since Marcus died, the family said other children in the Johnson family are afraid to play in parks.

“I got kids who say ‘I don’t like the parks anymore,” and that’s just sad,” Johnson Sr. said. “That limits me from doing things with my kids because of the fear they have out here.”

“Family members have to come and get my children out of the house because I have a fear of going out,” said Quiana Johnson.
