Simpsonville, SC (CNN) - The Simpsonville Police Department gained a new officer on Sunday.

Six-year-old Peyton Gesing is battling stage four Neuroblastoma. On Sunday, he got to live the dream.

Peyton was sworn in as an honorary police officer with the department. Police chief Keith Grounsell said he saw a picture of Peyton on Facebook with a friend with whom he went to high school. He immediately reached out to them to see if Peyton wanted to become a police officer for the day.

Peyton was given a full uniform, a badge, holster, toy gun and handcuffs. He went through a routine of different scenarios like any officer, including how to use his toy gun, cuff a suspect and help citizens in need.

Grounsell said Peyton is an inspiration to the entire department.

"Today I'm blessed to have to opportunity to not only fulfill a dream of his to be a hero, but also a dream of mine to be able to stand here in front of an even braver young man the way he fights against his cancer," Keith Grounsell said.

Peyton's mom said he's been excited for days waiting to become an officer.

"He's just a fighter and he has gone through more stuff than a lot of people I know," Suzanne Gesing said.

But for Peyton, his special day with the Simpsonville Police Department was not about his fight with cancer. It was about becoming an even bigger hero than he already was.

A fund has been set up for Peyton and his family to help pay for medical expenses. The fund has been set up under Ron Catlett, Peyton's grandfather, at the Suntrust Bank on Woodruff Road.

Donations can also be made on a GoFundMe account for Peyton.
