ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

A St. Louis man was sentenced to life in prison Friday for a fatal shooting at Kiener Plaza that was sparked by a spilled beer in 2013.

Steven Craig Rozier Jr., 36, was convicted of second-degree murder, first-degree assault, a gun charge and armed criminal action.

Rozier argued during the trial that he shot Mario Shackelford, 29, of Bellefontaine Neighbors, on July 17, 2013, in self-defense. However, prosecution witnesses said that Rozier stood above Shackelford when he fired at least one of the shots.

After the shooting, another man chased Rozier. Rozier was accused of trying to shoot the man before he was caught and beaten.

The argument started at a birthday celebration when Rozier spilled beer inside a vehicle.

During the sentencing hearing Friday, Rozier, of the 3500 block of Nebraska Avenue, said that he fired in self-defense, but he did express his sorrow over the shooting, officials said.
